Shopify SEO checklist for new stores — 14 steps before and after launch

This Shopify SEO checklist is for store owners who are about to launch, or launched recently and are wondering why Google isn’t sending visitors yet. The good news: Shopify takes care of several technical basics automatically. The less-good news: those basics aren’t what earns rankings. Product pages, collection pages and useful content do that — and they’re entirely up to you.

We build and fix Shopify stores regularly, and the same gaps come up again and again. Below are the 14 steps we work through, split into what to do before launch and what to do in the first 90 days after.

What Shopify already does for your SEO

According to Shopify’s own help documentation, every store automatically gets:

  • A sitemap.xml file listing your products, collections, pages and blog posts.
  • A robots.txt file, which you can customise if you need to.
  • Canonical tags to reduce duplicate-content problems.
  • Editable titles, meta descriptions and URLs for products, collections, pages and blog posts.
  • Secure HTTPS on every page.

So you rarely need to worry about the plumbing. Your time is better spent on the steps below.

Before launch: set the foundations

1. Research what your customers actually search for

Before writing a single product description, list the words real customers use. Look at Google’s autocomplete and “People also ask”, your competitors’ collection names, and questions customers send you on WhatsApp or Instagram. Match each important keyword to one page — usually a collection for broad terms (“cotton kurtas for women”) and a product page for specific ones.

2. Plan your collections around search terms

Collections often have the best chance of ranking, because they match broad searches. Name them the way people search, not with internal codes or clever brand names. “Men’s running shoes” will be found; “Velocity Range” won’t.

3. Write a unique title and meta description for key pages

Shopify fills these in automatically from your product name and description, but the defaults are rarely good. For your homepage, main collections and best-selling products, write your own:

  • Title: under about 60 characters, with the main keyword near the start and your store name at the end.
  • Meta description: 140–160 characters that tell the searcher why to click — a benefit, price point, delivery promise or offer.

4. Clean up your URLs (handles)

Shopify’s URL structure (/products/ and /collections/) is fixed, but the last part — the handle — is yours. Keep handles short, lowercase and descriptive: /products/linen-shirt-olive rather than /products/copy-of-new-product-final-2. Set them before launch, because changing them later means redirects.

5. Write original product descriptions

Copying the manufacturer’s description is one of the most common Shopify SEO mistakes — hundreds of other stores use the same text. Write your own: who the product is for, what problem it solves, materials, sizing, care, and answers to the questions customers ask before buying. Longer isn’t automatically better; useful is.

6. Add alt text and sensible file names to images

Describe each image plainly in its alt text (“olive linen shirt, front view”) and rename files before uploading. This helps accessibility and gives your products a chance to appear in Google Images.

7. Choose a fast theme and limit apps

Speed affects both rankings and sales, especially on mobile. Start with a modern, lightweight theme, compress images before uploading, and only install apps you genuinely need — many apps load extra code on every page. For Indian stores, see which Shopify apps you actually need.

8. Remove password protection and check indexing settings

While a store is password-protected, search engines can’t index it. Remove the password when you launch, and make sure you haven’t accidentally hidden important pages from search engines while building.

After launch: your first 90 days

9. Verify your store in Google Search Console

Add your domain to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap (yourstore.com/sitemap.xml). This tells Google your store exists and shows you which pages are indexed, what searches you appear for and any errors. It’s free and takes a few minutes.

10. Set up redirects for anything you move or remove

When you change a product or collection handle, Shopify offers to create a redirect from the old address — keep that option ticked. When you discontinue a product permanently, redirect its URL to the closest alternative or its collection using Shopify’s URL redirects, rather than leaving a dead page.

11. Build internal links

Link from your homepage to your main collections, from collections to key products, and from blog posts to the products and collections they mention. Internal links help Google find pages and understand which ones matter most.

12. Add useful content to collection pages

A short introduction at the top of each collection, and a few helpful FAQs or buying tips below the products, gives Google more context than a grid of product images alone. Keep it genuinely useful for shoppers, not a block of keywords.

13. Start a blog that answers buying questions

Shopify has a built-in blog. Use it to answer questions your customers search before buying: size guides, comparisons, care instructions, “how to choose” guides. Each post should link to the relevant collection or product. One good post a month beats ten thin ones.

14. Earn reviews and mentions

Product reviews add fresh, original content to your pages and help shoppers decide. Mentions and links from relevant blogs, local press, suppliers and partners build the trust signals that help your whole store rank.

Extra tips for Indian Shopify stores

  • Include delivery information clearly on product pages — delivery time, COD availability and return policy are common search and buying questions.
  • Use the words your customers use, including common Hindi or regional terms alongside English where they fit naturally.
  • Make your store fast on mid-range phones and mobile data, where many Indian shoppers browse.
  • Keep your business name, phone number and email consistent across your store, Google Business Profile and marketplaces.

Common Shopify SEO mistakes

  • Using manufacturer descriptions word for word.
  • Leaving the default titles and meta descriptions on key pages.
  • Collection names that nobody searches for.
  • Changing URLs without redirects.
  • Installing too many apps and slowing the store down.
  • Never submitting the sitemap to Google Search Console.
  • Expecting results in the first week — SEO usually takes months to build.

How long does Shopify SEO take?

New stores usually see pages indexed within days or weeks of submitting the sitemap. Rankings for competitive terms typically take several months of consistent work: better product pages, useful collection content, blog posts and earned mentions. Stores that keep improving steadily tend to see traffic compound over time.
